Creative services for the design-challenged developer

The 411 on 313

The 411 on 313

A few weeks ago our family went to church and Heather decided to leave Lucy in the nursery for the first time. Each child is assigned a number when they check in, so that if the nursery worker needs to notify a parent that their child needs attention, they can display that number on a small screen at the front of the church. Lucy’s randomly computer generated number was… (drum-roll please…. ) 313. Cool eh?

Wait… it gets better…

A couple of days ago I got my pants back from the dry cleaners, and this was the tag that was attached to them. No joke.

I thought the tag would make for some good blog fodder, and reminded me that I’ve been meaning to write a post about the name “31Three” for a long time.

When I was starting the business 5+ years ago, my wife and I were wrestling with what to name it. After a couple days of thumbing through dictionaries and thesauruses looking for the perfect name, Heather stumbled on an obscure text in the book of Exodus (31:3) that talks about God placing his Spirit on a guy named Bezalel to be creative, and to make stuff.

Not only have I filled him with my Spirit, but I have given him wisdom and made him a skilled craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood.

These words really resonated with me. Stepping out into business on my own was a real step of faith, and by naming my business after these words, it was kind of my way of tipping my hat to the Creator. Every time I have to explain to someone what the name means, it reminds me of my beginnings, and where I believe creativity comes from… and there’s something about thoughts like those that help me stay grounded.

I’ll admit that I’ve been a bit hesitant to share the story behind the name in fear that it might come across sounding like I’m saying “I’m God’s gift to web design” or something stupid like that… so please don’t read into it that way. I just wanted to share the meaning because I get quite a few emails asking, so I figured others out there might want to know as well.

In all practicality… it’s not a very good name. Trying to tell someone my email address over the phone is next to impossible, and it doesn’t really mean much to others besides myself. I’ve debated on changing it to just “Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain” a few times, but it seems that every time I do, something like the above dry cleaners tag will cross my path and change my mind.

Man, that’s really cool. I’m always interested in the origin of companies name, and am always amazed when there is so sort of religious meaning behind them. As a fellow believer/designer I thought the meaning behind your name was really creative and inspiring.

I know the story of you choosing the name(you wrote it some time ago in a forum I think) and I really like it. When I started, my father also showed me that passage in the Bible, but I never had your idea. Shortly after, I found about you. That’s really cool.

Keep up the good work :)

Nice to hear the reasons behind your company name – thanks for sharing. I’m a little freaked out by how number follow us around like that though … you’re not in touch with Hurley from Lost, are you?

Thanks for sharing your inspiration. I have been following your blog because of the quality of your design work and now I know why you have such a commitment to excellence. I am a freelance web developer and also a pastor of praise and worship. There is a similar passage for musicians in Psalm 33:3. Alas, 33three.com is taken.

That’s freakin’ awesome! I’ve always meant to ask what 31three meant thanks for sharing the story behind the name.

Keep up the great work.

“Not only have I filled him with my Spirit, but I have given him wisdom and made him a skilled craftsman who can create objects of art with gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood.”... code and pixels?

What a great verse. I wish I would have come across it before you had…

Thanks for sharing, definitely interesting stuff. And I echo your frustrations on trying to explain your company’s name to someone, especially over the phone.

I named my company SIX15 solutions. And when most people hear that they write 615, or Six 15, or some other variation.

I enjoy your blog posts on design insight, and business. Thanks again.

Best,
Jeff

I’m always fascinated by how people come up with names for websites, companies, bands, etc … and I’ve always wondered what the meaning behind 31Three was.

Thanks for sharing, Jesse.

In Michigan “313” refers to Detroit (as in the area code).

That is so cool.

God bless you, your family and your business.

It’s just meant to be…

How funny is that I ask? I guess you’re stuck with it now. At least you aren’t stuck with something as silly as “Sites by Jesse”...

I always see the number 3 around so i get this in a way btw I really respect your designs and think your just a great web designer.. The company I just joined uses the EE and its one reason I wanted to join I knew you did the EE site.
Thanks

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for sharing this story with us. I’ve also always wondered where 31Three came from. It makes perfect sense and is such a great name to represent your beautiful work! I would advise people to stay away from numbers in their business names, but it works in this situation.

Please keep up the good work and I’m glad we are starting to hear a bit more from you on the blog front!

Great post.
Lots of substance.
Substantial post.

Like everyone else, I’m impressed with this post and the origin of you’re company’s name.

I say your instincts were right on, when you decided on 31Three! Great that both of you thought it was a good name, too. It’s another thing that you share. Not important that everyone knows why you’re 31Three. A lot of us who’ve read your blog have guessed that it was something like that.

My folks use to say “Offer it up!” when I was faced with adversity, acknowledging the role the Lord, God played (still does too) in my life and asking for God’s help in that acknowledgement. I’m impressed that you’ve “offered up” your success as well.

3+1+3 = 7, the luckiest number.

I really like the way you write your blogs and have become a huge admirer of your writing skills as well.

The word 31Three has really worked for your business and I wish you more success.

Great story. Love that Exodus quote.

Jesse,

I am truly inspired by your story and your work. Your story sort of parallels my own, but I will not go into the details at this time. You have certainly been an inspiration to me to continue improving my skills to be the best God has purposed me to be. Thanks so much and God bless. Have a great New Year!

You’d probably have a harder time explaining your email address as jesse-bennett-chamberlin … but I’ve always found 31Three to be memorable. Hey, it’s what brought me back here just now to check in on you. :)

Great story behind your name!! As a business owner, I think it is very important to have a name that means something to you. It doesn’t hurt for it to be a conversation starter as well.

It is always interesting to learn more about people on the other side of the pixels. Thanks for posting this Jesse.

Hi Jesse, I don’t think that’s just a random coincidence there. I think there’s a lot of substance to that name. I wouldn’t consider getting rid of it any time soon. This from a fellow believer.

You definitely have a God-given talent. Thanks for being a great example and inspiration to the web design community.

wow, ...maybe you’re so famous across town that they assign you “your” number in the waiting lines… :D But anyway, that’s pretty cool!

Always wondered about the name, but I found it easy to remember from the first time I saw your site. So I think it’s good to stick with it! :)

After arriving at your site from a link on Authentic Boredom a few years back, I knew I stumbled across something that would inspire me and my work for some time. It was an instant bookmark and your company name just always stuck. I come back every once in awhile to check out your new work and weblog. Thanks for sharing.

I actually know a few people who have started companies with names referencing Bible verses—I wonder how many are out there?

@timoni. Probably around 313.

Superb. Every time I visit this site/read one of your posts I am inspired. You are a great witness and a good roll-model as well. Keep up the good work.

I appreciate the fact that you’ve been cautious about your story. I give your url to professional web developers all the time. You are a professional and I’m glad that my colleagues see that first … but the truth is, we’ve known this about Jesse. You can’t hide. It comes out in your work.

Frustrations/explanations aside, you do have quite a great name! Your work is great, too. Keep it up and best of luck…

I’m thinking about going out on my own and thinking about names, too. As I believer, I agree that both God and the Bible would be great inspiration.

Hi!

I write from Colombia. This story is amazing and very strange. About the coincidences (awesome!), I think that is a typical case of “Synchronicity”. I invite you to check this term in wikipedia. Thanks for share this experience.

Gustavo Ojeda-Pepinosa

Awesome. I always thought it was something like your area code, but I was surprised to find out that it had religious meaning behind it. I’m also a believer / designer. Even just a story about how you named your business can be inspiring for others out there like you. Keep up the awesome work.

And ironically, my CAPTCHA word for this comment is “hell.”

Don’t ever change the name. It’s unique… as a designer myself… names like that are hard to come by… I think it’s slick!

I’ve been wondering what book in the Bible you took that from for quite a while. Thanks for sharing that. I’ve always admired your work and when I found out you were a Christian some time ago it all clicked that your work resonates something a little different from the rest of the web design flock. The Lord has truly best your pixels. :-)

*I recently registered CreationCloud and I’ll be using that as my studio soon… I was led to the name the same as you were.

Keep up the great work!

Because you need another comment on this… Similar naming experience… FourTen Creative is my working name from Ephesians 4:10 which is all about diversity of gifts. It inspired a working ethic of “Let me use my gifts so you can use yours more effectively.”
Also, considering stepping out on my own… scary stuff with little kids. Bless you and your work!

Jesse,

Excellent story, endearing to say the least!
Keep up the great work.

Jesse,

I think it is amazing how you picked your name. There is so much in a name and I admire the way went about selecting it. I comb the bible everyday and it seizes to amaze me that there is so many verses, so many scriptures I have never seen.

Keep up the wonderful work…

God bless

No man, thats a good name, don’t scratch it. Anytime you have a story like that to tell behind a name it’s a keeper.

Any and all talent any of us have is given to us from God, it’s what we do with the given talent that defines us.

Keep up the inspiring work, and never drop the name.

:) That’s a great story… I know how you feel when you have to communicate with clients and such. But I believe that even if sometimes there might be some difficulties, eventually they’re gonna catch on.

I also chose “awholeuniverse” because I think it best summarizes my beliefs, and who I am.

Great Brand, Great Site… Keep up the good work!

Hello Jesse,

I have been thinking for quite a while why you named this website ‘31three.com’ and with this thought i visited your website today and I got my answer :)

The thought behind this name is really good. The design of this website and the work you have done is as superb as the name from the holy book i.e. 31three

Wish you all the best with your new home and your future endeavours.

Regards and Wishes
Mutahir

Because I couldn’t leave this page without leaving a thumbprintI wanted to let you know that I love how your faith is intertwined with your work. I first found your site when researching church web design and found The City Church. I will be sure to bookmark your site!

This week is the first week my husband and I are freelancing after being called by God to make the switch during our seventh month of pregnancy.

Love the story behind the name. That’s pretty cool. My sister goes to Mars Hill in Grand Rapids Michigan and they have the same numbering system for kids. Kind of a foreign concept to someone from a small church like me. I guess there’s enough sickos out there that might try to steal a child.

Hi. I’m a designer aswell. I think the way you came up with your company name is pretty cool. I also came up with the name of my company from the bible. But not from a verse, I re-named the word “sincerity” to just “cerity”, and that became my name.

I hope you’ll do good in the future.

The word in my captcha was “keep”, so keep up the good work!

Kind regards,

Jonathan

That ROCKS Jesse.

Hey Jesse,

Its been a while since we have seen any design process posts .. whats up with that? I thin personally this site is one of the most inspirational sites I visit weekly if not daily and I find your design process posts most interesting and informative ..

We haven’t seen much in the lines of new work either .. are you working on something secretive? ..

Looking forward to your next design process post and upcoming work ..

Adam

Jesse,
My brother and I enjoy having a marketing company together – we are both believers and we named our company 1429 – like you, it was a risk stepping out on faith, so the story of Peter in Matt 14:29 resonates with us as well. AND it always provides a reason to brag on the Creator when people want to know more about our name. We almost named it RanDon Marketing – BORING!

You should consider separating the religious undertones from you business.

It just turnes me off
